Welcome to Python
Your first program
Python 3 can automate tasks, work with data, and run programs on many systems. Here you write Python in main.py; the browser runs it with Pyodide, so no installation or terminal setup is required. On your own computer you could install Python 3 and run python hello.py in a terminal. The program in a file needs print() to display a result; a bare expression will not display itself like it does in the interactive terminal.
A string is text in quotes, for example "Hello". print("Hello") displays Hello without quotes. Read the next editable example, change it, press Run to see its output, then press Submit to check your edit. If you see a SyntaxError, check parentheses and quotation marks. Every exercise that follows has a different setting from its worked example.
This first section practices output, named values, and types. The next one uses those values for calculations and text from a user; later sections handle decisions and loops.
